For many young people coming to the project, using the SASH schemes may be the first time in their lives that they have a stable home environment and are able to live with someone who can give them a positive outlook on life. Barbara Anderson has been a host for over five years and finds the role challenging, yet rewarding. This is what she says about hosting:
“Every teenager is different, with different needs. That’s what makes it so interesting and rewarding. It is great to see how they have got on and made a success in their lives.”
In order to offer these services to vulnerable young people, SASH relies on the recruitment of suitable volunteer hosts for short-term accommodation in York, Selby, Hambleton, Richmondshire, Ryedale and Scarborough. In York we also need Supported Lodgings hosts. Click on the links below to find out more about being a host.
We are looking for people who:
Short-term hosts provide an evening meal, the chance of a bath or shower, a bed for the night and breakfast the following morning. Supported Lodgings hosts are required to support the young people in developing practical skills such as cleaning, shopping and money management. It is also part of the host’s role to provide some emotional support.
You can download an application form using the link below and return the completed form to us by post or email (see 'Contact Us'). If you would prefer an informal chat before completing the form, you are welcome to drop in at our offices, or we can visit you at home if you prefer - just give us a call on 01904 652043.
Once we have received your application, we will get in touch to arrange an interview. If successful, we will take up references and begin the training process as soon as possible. To ensure that young people are offered a safe placement, all prospective hosts and anyone over 16 living in their household will also need an enhanced CRB check.
