Our Impact

Crashpad and Supported Lodgings

The young people we accommodate in the SASH Crashpad or Supported Lodgings scheme are, for a variety of reasons, not able to live at home. They do not have the maturity or skills required to manage their own accommodation, so live with one of our volunteer hosts for up to two years whilst they develop these skills, with the support of their host and SASH staff.

In 2010-2011 we accommodated 21 individuals in our Crashpad and Supported Lodgings schemes.

17 were ready to leave the schemes during this period.

Of these, three quarters moved into independent accommodation and three returned to family or moved in with friends.

13 of those moving on were in education or full-time employment, with the remainder actively seeking work.

2 fulfilled their ambitions to go on to university.

Nightstop

Through our SASH Nightstop project we can ensure that young people facing homelessness are kept safe at night. They can get a hot meal and a bed in their own room, are not isolated and have someone to talk to if they wish. Just as importantly, the young people are supported to continue attending school or college, or get to their place of work, so that their problems were not exacerbated by interruptions to education or loss of work. In the meantime, local agencies can work to find a long term solution to the young person's homelessness. See the slideshow below for why young people would recommend Nightstop to a friend.

Last year, we helped 130 young people aged 16-24 across York and North Yorkshire, arranging Nightstop accommodation on 572 occasions.
47% of those seeking help were just 16 or 17 years old.
For more than half the reason for homelessness was family breakdown.
